Naivasha town at a glance
Naivasha town is the main urban centre near the lake. It is run as a municipality within Nakuru County, and its tasks include markets, housing, sanitation and the local road network. For visitors, that means shops, services and transport connections. The sights are somewhere else: the water, the islands and the volcano lie outside the town centre.
Think of the town as a supply stop. You can arrive from Nairobi, buy what you need, sort out your onward ride and then head to the shore. If you want boat rides, hippos and the walking sanctuary, the other guides on this site cover them. This page covers the practical side.

What to do in Naivasha town
The centre is useful, not a sight in itself. Plan short stops.
Stock up before the lake
Small shops and roadside stalls line the main streets. Buy water, snacks, sun cream and a hat here before you go to Crescent Island or Mount Longonot. Do not count on finding a shop at a jetty or a park gate.
Money
Plan your cash before you leave town. Do not assume there is a cash machine near your lodge or the boat landing. Crescent Island accepts cash in USD, KES and GBP, M-Pesa and cards other than American Express. Park fees at Mount Longonot can be paid in advance by KWSPay on eCitizen, by M-Pesa, by Visa or by bank transfer.
Markets and services
Municipal markets are a normal part of the town's role, but market days and opening hours vary. Ask at your accommodation, and treat market visits as a short stop in the morning, not a fixed part of the day.
Onward rides
Matatus link the town with Nairobi. For the lake sights you need a vehicle, a driver or a tour, because they spread along the shore and out to the park gates. See the page on getting to Naivasha for routes and fares.
Town or lakeshore: where to base yourself
Staying in town is practical if you arrive by matatu, want shops nearby or plan a lot of different outings. Staying on the shore is better if you want early boats, quiet evenings and a short walk to the water.
Remember that the sights do not cluster at the centre. The boat landings, Elsamere and the lodges lie along the lake, while Mount Longonot and Hell's Gate have their own gates. Travel times between them depend on traffic and road conditions, so ask for current driving times before you fix a day plan. Our Naivasha hotels guide compares the town and the South Lake Road area.
Boat rides and day tours are easier to arrange from a lakeside base. If you only have one day, a Naivasha day tour from Nairobi saves you from handling transport in town at all.

Day trips from the town
Everything below starts from Naivasha, but each sight has its own access and its own fees.

Lake Naivasha boat ride
What a boat trip costs, how long it takes and what to ask before you step in.

Crescent Island
Entry fees, opening hours and why you reach the sanctuary by boat only.

Mount Longonot
The crater rim hike with KWS fees and gate hours.

Elsamere
Joy Adamson's house on the lake, with tea in the garden.
Hell's Gate lies south of the lake, reached over Moi South Lake Road. It is a separate national park with its own entry rules, so read the Hell's Gate National Park guide before you plan a cycling day.
Trains, matatus and the town
A common mistake is to expect a train into the centre. The Kenya Railways leisure service to Suswa stops at Maai Mahiu and does not stop in Naivasha town. If you take the train, plan a road transfer from Maai Mahiu to your lodge. The page on Mai Mahiu explains the stop and the escarpment road above it.
Matatus from Nairobi leave from the Tea Room area on Kenneth Matiba Road. Fares are roughly KES 200 to 500 per person and change, so ask the conductor before you board, and keep small notes ready. Avoid arriving after dark if you can, and avoid night driving where possible.
Naivasha town: frequently asked questions
Is Naivasha town worth a stop?
Yes, for supplies, money and onward transport. It is not a sightseeing town, and most visitors spend a short time here before they go to the lake, Elsamere or Mount Longonot.
How many people live in Naivasha?
The 2019 census gave about 198,000 for the urban area. Municipal and sub-county boundaries differ, so figures vary slightly depending on what is counted.
Does a train go to Naivasha town?
The train does not stop in the town. The leisure service to Suswa stops at Maai Mahiu on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. From there you continue by road.
Can I walk from the town to the lake?
Do not plan on it. The shore, the jetties and the lodges are spread out, and access can depend on the water level. Ask your accommodation for the current best way to reach the water.
How far is Hell's Gate from Naivasha?
About 35 km along Moi South Lake Road from Naivasha. Allow time for the road and for the park entry procedure.
Is this an official Naivasha or county website?
No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not run by Nakuru County, the Naivasha municipality, the Kenya Wildlife Service, a hotel or a tour operator.
