Where to stay at Lake Naivasha
You choose a place to stay by area, not by name. The two main options are the town of Naivasha and the long stretch of shore along the Moi South Lake Road. The town gives you shops, services and transport. The shore gives you quiet evenings, early boats and a garden by the water, if the water is where you expect it to be.
This guide compares areas, not individual hotels, lodges or camps. It gives you locations, trade-offs and a checklist instead of nightly prices. For the boat itself, read our Lake Naivasha boat ride guide, because your jetty shapes the choice of base.

Naivasha hotels by area compared
The lake sights spread out, so the base matters.
| Area | Good for | Check before you book |
|---|---|---|
| Naivasha town | Shops, services, matatu arrivals, an overnight stop on the way | How you reach the lake and the park gates in the morning |
| South Lake Road and the shore | Early boats, quiet evenings, access toward Hell's Gate | Whether the garden, jetty and path to the water are usable now |
| Farm and camp grounds on private land | Camping, a simple stay, activities on the grounds | Pitch availability, fees and rules for night time |
| No stay, a day trip from Nairobi | One free day, no transport planning | A long day, with the drive each way |
For most visitors with two or three days, the shore along the South Lake Road is the better base, and the town is the better choice for a single night or a low-key arrival.
Naivasha resorts and lakeside stays
"Lakeside" can mean different things. The water has risen by up to about 7 m between 2010 and 2026, and some shores, paths and buildings have flooded. A property can still call itself lakefront while its garden, path or jetty is under water. Ask directly whether you can walk to the water, whether the jetty is in use, and whether boats leave from the grounds.
Think about which boat you want. Crescent Island transfers run from several landings, and the farther private camp jetties are about 45 minutes each way. A base close to your jetty saves time and money on the day. Crescent Island transfers cost from KES 2,500 per boat, up to KES 10,000, for up to 7 people (as of 2026), and the price depends on the landing. Confirm the current price and ask your accommodation which landing they use.
Resorts and lodges differ in what they offer on the grounds. Ask about meals, quiet hours and whether they arrange boats, guides and transport to Mount Longonot or Hell's Gate. A Naivasha day tour from Nairobi can also be an option if you prefer to sleep in the city. See our Naivasha tours and day trips.

Naivasha camping and farm stays
For a simple base or a tent.
Camping on private grounds
Some farms on the lake offer camping on their own land. That is an accommodation type, not a promise of free pitches, so ask about fees, rules and night-time access to the shore. Ask before you pitch a tent anywhere on the shore.
Camping in a park
Camping inside Hell's Gate National Park follows the park's own rules and fees. The Hell's Gate camping guide covers it.
Night safety at the shore
Hippos come onto land. Do not wander along the shore at night, and follow the advice of the staff where you stay. Crescent Island asks visitors back on the boat by 5:45 p.m. for the same reason.
The shoreline can look different from the booking photos. Ask for a current picture of the water edge if your plans depend on it.

Naivasha hotels: frequently asked questions
Should I stay in the town or by the lake?
Choose the town for shops, services and one night on arrival. Choose the shore along the South Lake Road for early boats and quiet evenings. The shore suits a stay of two or three days.
Can I walk to the water from a lakeside hotel?
Do not assume it. The lake has risen, and shores and paths have flooded. Ask whether the garden, path and jetty are usable now.
Where can I camp near Lake Naivasha?
Some farms offer camping on their own grounds, and Hell's Gate National Park has its own camping guide. Ask about fees and rules in advance.
How long does a boat to Crescent Island take?
From the farther private camp jetties it takes about 45 minutes each way. A base near your landing saves time.
Can I do Naivasha as a day trip from Nairobi?
Yes, but it is a long day with the drive each way, which is usually quoted at 1.5 to 2.5 hours. An overnight stay gives you more time on the water.
Is this an official Naivasha hotel site?
No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not run by a hotel, a booking service, Nakuru County or any operator, and it does not take bookings.
