Lake Naivasha hippos at a glance

Hippos live in Lake Naivasha, in its swamps and in the Malewa area. Roughly 600 to 700 hippos live around the lake (2016 to 2022). Numbers change, so treat that as a rough guide. The easiest way to see them is from a small boat on the lake, and good chances are the most anyone can offer: sightings are never guaranteed.

Hippos are wild animals and can be dangerous, in the water and on land. This page explains where to watch them, how to behave and which rules you can rely on. It also explains the place name "Hippo Point", which belongs to a private property.

Where to see hippos at Lake Naivasha

The best-known way is a boat ride on the lake. A boat keeps you on the water with a skipper who knows where the animals are that day. Prices are per boat, not per person. See the Lake Naivasha boat rides page for prices, trip length and the life jacket rule.

Hippos also appear along the shore. Hippos live on Crescent Island too, which is why the sanctuary asks you to be back in the boat by 17:45. Parts of the shore are private land, and shores can flood when the lake is high, so do not count on walking to the water anywhere.

Our pick: a two-day trip with a boat safari

This trip has a boat safari on the lake on day two, the way to look for hippos from the water. No tour can promise a sighting.

Hippo Point Naivasha: what the name means

"Hippo Point" is the name of a private property in Kongoni, Naivasha. It is not a public viewing jetty. If you want to see hippos, use a boat or a sanctuary walk.

When you read about hippo viewing spots, ask whether they are open to the public, who runs them and how you reach the water on the day.

Hippo safety rules on the water and the shore

  • In the boat: wear a fitted life jacket all the time. Let the skipper set the distance and do not ask for closer passes.
  • Passenger limits: stay within the boat's passenger limit and choose a skipper who is sober.
  • Late in the day: hippos come ashore. Be off the shore and back in the boat by the time the sanctuary closes at 17:45.
  • At night: do not go for walks along the shore on your own, and do not approach hippos on land.
  • Swimming: nothing makes swimming in the lake a safe plan. Stay out of the water.

These are common-sense precautions, not a guarantee of safety. Wildlife remains a risk. When the lake floods the shore, people and hippos share the same ground, which is one more reason to ask locally before you walk along the water.

How hippos behave: day and night

Hippos spend the day in the water and come ashore to feed. That is why the rule for Crescent Island is tied to the end of the day, and why walks along the shore after dark are not a good idea.

Read about the other wildlife on the Crescent Island page, about the birds on the birds page and about seasons and weather before you pick a date.
