Mai Mahiu and the Rift Valley escarpment

Mai Mahiu (also written Maai Mahiu) is a small town on the route between Nairobi and Naivasha. Here the land falls away from the highland edge to the floor of the Rift Valley. Travellers come through for the view, for the train stop and as a gateway to the lake country. The town itself is not a sightseeing stop with a ticket and a car park. It is a place on the way, and the escarpment is the reason to slow down.

The setting matters for planning. The old road runs below the edge on a busy corridor with lorries, and planned upgrades of the highway have not been built yet. Allow extra time on this stretch, and read the page on getting to Naivasha if you are still choosing between road and rail.

Rift Valley viewpoint: what you can see

The view is the main draw. Treat it as a stop you choose carefully, not as a staffed attraction.

The edge and the floor

From the escarpment you look down green slopes to the wide valley bottom, with a distant volcano on a clear day. This is one of the places on the Nairobi road where you see how far the valley sits below the highlands. For the wider setting, see the Great Rift Valley guide.

Where to stop

The view comes from the escarpment itself, not from a ticketed platform with set hours. If you want a photo, ask your driver for a safe pull-out, leave the carriageway clear and do not stop on bends or in the lane. Lorry traffic is heavy on this stretch.

Light and weather

Views are clearest when the air is dry. Cloud can hide the far side of the valley, especially in the rainy months. Our Naivasha weather guide covers the long and short rains.

On a clear day the valley floor stretches out toward a distant volcano. Photographs rarely show the scale. Bring a light jacket for early starts.

The road from Nairobi to Naivasha

Two main routes lead toward Naivasha. The route through Maai Mahiu is called A8 South. The route through Nakuru and on to Mau Summit is called A8. The name A104 is also used for the same corridors, so you may see both. Name the road and the towns when you give directions to a driver.

Upgrades of the road between Nairobi, Maai Mahiu and Naivasha are planned. There is no finished expressway yet, so do not plan around a new toll road. Driving time from Nairobi to Naivasha is usually 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic. Avoid night driving where possible, which matters on an escarpment road with heavy lorries.

Our pick: a Rift Valley photo stop

This day trip stops at a Rift Valley viewpoint on the way. It is not a visit to the town of Mai Mahiu itself.

The train stop at Maai Mahiu

A scenic way to reach the valley, with a road transfer at the end.

Timetable

In the 2026 timetable the Suswa leisure service leaves Nairobi Terminus at 8:50 a.m. and reaches Maai Mahiu at 10:34 a.m., then Suswa at 11:10 a.m. The return leaves Suswa at 4:05 p.m. and Maai Mahiu at 4:15 p.m., reaching Nairobi Terminus at 6:10 p.m. It runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Check the current timetable before you go.

What the train does not do

It does not run to the lakeshore, and it has no stop in Naivasha town. Plan a road transfer from Maai Mahiu to your lodge or your boat. Arrange the onward ride in advance, because you cannot count on a shuttle at the station.

The chapel

A roadside chapel, known as the Mai Mahiu Catholic Church or Travellers' Church, was built by Italian prisoners of war in 1942. Treat it as a short stop if you pass, and respect it as a place of worship.

Floods and caution in the Mai Mahiu area

On 29 April 2024 a blocked culvert gave way near Mai Mahiu and a destructive flood hit the area. It is part of the town's recent history and a reason to respect local advice in heavy rain. It does not mean the road is closed today. Low-lying parts near the lake and around Mai Mahiu can flood during the long rains from March to May and the short rains from October to December.

If you travel in a rainy period, ask your accommodation or driver about the road before you leave. Avoid walking across flooded ground, and do not cross running water. For the longer story of the lake and its land, see the history of Lake Naivasha. If you want a base in town after the drive, Naivasha town is the next stop on the road.
