Lake Naivasha boat rides at a glance
A Lake Naivasha boat ride takes you onto the open water to watch hippos, fish eagles and pelicans from a small boat. Prices are set per boat, not per person. A one hour trip starts at about KES 4,000 per boat, depending on the departure point, with a maximum of 7 passengers (as of 2026). There is no lake-wide tariff, so ask for the price before you board.
Boats also take visitors to Crescent Island. That trip is priced separately from a lake tour, and the sanctuary entry is a third cost. This page explains what each part costs and where boats leave from. It also covers life jackets and what to do when the hippos come close.

Our picks: Lake Naivasha boat rides
The guided island tour is the clearest choice if you want the boat fee and the island entry settled in one price. Take the riding combination if you would rather mix the lake with a horse, or the day trip if you also want Hell's Gate.

Lake Naivasha boat ride price
Prices as of 2026, depending on the departure point. They change, and there is no single lake-wide tariff.
| Trip | Price (as of 2026) | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| One hour lake trip | From KES 4,000 per boat | Up to 7 passengers; depends on the departure point; book ahead, especially for boats and groups |
| Crescent Island boat ride | From KES 8,000 per boat | Up to 7 passengers; depends on the departure point; sanctuary entry is extra |
| Crescent Island transfer, return | KES 2,500 to 10,000 per boat | Up to 7 people; depends on the departure point |
| Crescent Island transfer, per person | $40 adult, $20 child | Some operators offer this instead of a per-boat price |
| Crescent Island entry | $33 adult non-resident | Paid on the island, not to the boatman |
For most visitors, a one hour boat ride is the simplest plan for hippos and birds. Add Crescent Island if you have half a day and want to walk among giraffes and zebras. Do not compare a lake tour with a bare island transfer: they are different trips. Fees for the sanctuary are on the Crescent Island page.
Where Lake Naivasha boats leave from
Boats leave from a public beach and from private camp and lodge jetties along the shore. Both kinds are used for the Crescent Island transfer. From the more distant camp jetties the crossing takes about 45 minutes each way. Decide on your departure point first, because it changes the price and the time on the water.
Because the lake level changes, jetties and shore paths can flood. Ask the operator which jetty is in use that week and how you will reach it. Some shore land is private, so do not assume you can walk to the water anywhere.

Life jackets and boat safety
Kenya's maritime safety guidance asks passengers to wear a fitted life jacket at all times in the boat. It also expects enough rescue equipment, a licensed and insured boat, a way to communicate and a skipper who has not been drinking. Respect the passenger limit: boats on the lake carry up to 7 people.
- Before you board: ask for a life jacket in your size, and for children too.
- Hippos: let the skipper decide how close the boat goes, and do not ask for closer passes. Hippos are wild animals and can be dangerous.
- Late in the day: on Crescent Island you must be back in the boat by 17:45 because hippos come ashore. Plan to be off the water well before dusk.
- Swimming: nothing makes swimming in the lake a safe plan. Stay in the boat.
More on watching hippos is on the hippos page.
Best time for a Lake Naivasha boat ride
There are no lake-wide operating hours, so ask your operator for departure times. The long rains fall from March to May and the short rains from October to December, with local differences. No month guarantees calm water, and good chances are not a promise of sightings.
If you are choosing between a lake trip and a day trip from Nairobi, read the tours page. For the weather by season, see the weather page.
How to book a boat
Book ahead, particularly for boats and groups. That is advice, not a rule. Ask four things when you book: the price per boat, the number of passengers allowed, where the boat leaves and whether the trip includes Crescent Island. Pay the sanctuary entry to the sanctuary only, and ask for its official receipt.

A one hour trip starts at about KES 4,000 per boat for up to 7 passengers, and a Crescent Island boat ride at about KES 8,000 per boat, depending on the departure point (as of 2026). Prices change over time, so confirm before you board.
How long is the trip?
A standard lake trip lasts 1 hour. The crossing to Crescent Island from the more distant camp jetties takes about 45 minutes each way.

Do I have to wear a life jacket?
Safety guidance asks passengers to wear a fitted life jacket at all times. Ask for one before the boat leaves the jetty.
Will I see hippos?
Chances are good, but nobody can guarantee sightings. See the hippos page for where they live and how to behave around them.
Is lake-naivasha.org a boat operator or an official site?
No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to any boat operator, the Kenya Wildlife Service, Nakuru County or any sanctuary on the lake.
