Lake Naivasha at a glance
Lake Naivasha is a shallow freshwater lake in the southern Rift Valley of Kenya, in Nakuru County. The Malewa and Gilgil rivers feed it, and no river drains it at the surface. The wetland around it is a Ramsar site of 30,000 hectares, but that figure describes the protected area, not the open water. The lake rises and falls, and since 2010 it has risen by up to about 7 m, so shores and jetties change from year to year.
Most visitors come for a boat ride among the hippos and birds, a walk on Crescent Island or a day trip from Nairobi. This guide also covers Mount Longonot, Crater Lake and Lake Oloiden, Elsamere and Joy Adamson, birds, Naivasha town, the Mai Mahiu escarpment, history, weather, where to stay and how to get here. Prices are in US dollars or Kenyan shillings, as of 2026, and they change.

Naivasha: what the name covers
People search for "Naivasha" and mean three things: the lake, the town of the same name and the wider area with its parks and farms. The lake is where the boats, hippos and birds are. The town is where you buy supplies, change buses and find a matatu. The wider area includes Mount Longonot to the east, Hell's Gate to the south and the escarpment above Mai Mahiu on the road from Nairobi.
Boat rides, the Crescent Island sanctuary and Elsamere are separate services with separate fees. Mount Longonot is a national park run by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and has its own tariff. Nothing is charged for "the lake" as a whole, so read each page before you budget.

A few things to know before you go
Six points that change how you plan a visit in 2026.
Crescent Island is reached by boat
At present the sanctuary can only be reached by water. It runs no boats itself, so you pay the entry on the island and the boat separately. Depending on the water level, the sanctuary is an island or a peninsula.
Crescent Island guide โPredators live there too
Spotted hyena and jackal live there as well as giraffe, zebra and wildebeest. Guides cost nothing extra and depend on availability, so ask for one at the entrance or book ahead for a guaranteed guide.
Walking safari details โThe lake has been rising
The water rose by around 7 m between 2010 and 2026, and the lake is about 40% larger. Shores, jetties and gardens that were dry years ago can be under water, so ask about lake access before you book a waterside stay.
Where to stay โKWS fees changed in October 2025
For Mount Longonot and Hell's Gate the tariff since 1 October 2025 is $50 for adult non-residents and $25 for children. Check the current KWS tariff before you pay.
Mount Longonot fees โElsamere is Joy Adamson's house
The house stands on Lake Naivasha. Elsa the lioness was released in the Meru area, not here, and Born Free was published in 1960 and filmed in 1966.
Elsamere โHealth insurance for entry
From 5 October 2026 most foreign short-term visitors need a state travel health insurance, arranged with the eTA application or through the eCitizen portal if you already hold an eTA. It does not replace your own policy.
Entry and transport โBeyond Lake Naivasha

Hell's Gate National Park lies south of the lake and has its own guide to the gorge, cycling and entry. For a bigger safari, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara each have a guide of their own. This site stays with the lake and the places you reach from it.

Lake Naivasha: frequently asked questions
Is there an entry fee for Lake Naivasha?
There is no single fee for the lake. Boat rides, the Crescent Island sanctuary, Elsamere and Mount Longonot are separate services with their own prices. See the pages on boat rides, Crescent Island and Mount Longonot.
How far is Lake Naivasha from Nairobi?
About 91 km by road. Plan on roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic and where you start. The A8 South runs via Maai Mahiu, and the A8 runs via Nakuru. More on the getting there page.
Is Crescent Island really an island?
It depends on the water level. The sanctuary on the east shore is an island at some levels and a peninsula at others. Today you reach it by boat only, so check the access with your boat operator.
When is the best time to visit?
It depends on what you want to do. The long rains fall from March to May and the short rains from October to December, with local differences. No month guarantees calm water or open shore paths. See the weather page.
Do I need an eTA for Kenya?
The eTA system continues in 2026, with exemptions under the 2025 rules. Processing usually takes about 3 days, and applying at least 2 weeks before you travel is a sensible margin. Check the current rules for your passport before you book.
Is lake-naivasha.org the official site of the lake?
No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to the Kenya Wildlife Service, Nakuru County, Crescent Island, Elsamere, any boat operator, hotel or tour company.
